Suicide Is a Serious Public Health Problem

Nationwide, suicide claims one life every 13 minutes. It is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. and the second leading cause of death for young people (aged 15 to 34.) From 2011 to 2021, the total age-adjusted suicide death rate increased from 12.3 to 14.1 per 100,000 people. During that time period, the rate increased from 20 to 22.8 per 100,000 for males. Among females, the rate increased from 5.2 in 2011 to 5.7 in 2021.ii The causes of suicide are multiple and complex; and often includes a combination of factors, such as painful loss, mental health issues, substance abuse, social isolation, and exposure to violence.

As a leader in behavioral health in Wayne County, the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN) is committed providing our partners with the suicide prevention resources they need. Our strategic plan includes strategies designed to increase the capacity of DWIHN to lead in a comprehensive, multi-setting approach and system-wide culture change through the implementation of the Zero Suicide intervention and prevention model with the goal of reducing suicide ideation, attempts, and deaths in Wayne County, Michigan.
